About Our Coaches
Head Coach: Alec Rukosuev
As head coach, Alec Rukosuev brings a unique and exciting perspective to our program. He believes each and every swimmer, given the right coaching and motivation, will reach potential beyond expectation. Through his own determination and conviction, Coach Alec teaches each swimmer to set goals and to dream big. The character that is developed in his swim program carries over into every aspect of life.
Coach Alec studied coaching in his hometown of Omsk, Russia at the Institute of Physical Culture and graduated with a degree in swim coaching. He has continued his training and is currently a Level 5 ASCA coach, a ranking held by the top 3-5% of swim coaches in the USA. He possesses an extensive knowledge of sports physiology, which is evident in his training regimen. He began coaching in central FL three years ago. In that brief period, he has produced tremendous results. His swimmers have set 2 national records, 19 state records, 70 Top 16 finishes, and 10 have ranked #1 nationally. They consistently final at Junior Olympics and other key meets. His passion and enthusiasm for swimming is unparalleled.
In addition to coaching age group swimmers, Alec has also coached Masters swimmers, marathoners and triathletes. Those athletes have had similar results to his swimmers. Mary Aleco, a marathoner, qualified for the World Championships and was ranked 2nd in the US after training with Coach Alec for one year.
Alec was a distance swimmer as a youth and was Russian national champion in the 1500 meter freestyle in 1991. He then focused on triathlons and was a professional triathlete for 10 years. During that time he finished in 6 Ironman competitions and finished 13th in the Hawaii Ironman, the World Championship of triathlons. He was ranked #1 in the US 3 different years.

Assistant Coach: Misty Becerra, B.S
Misty received her Bachelors of Science in exercise science from Florida Atlantic University and has been working at the NTC since 2004 as an exercise specialist. Misty enjoys teaching stroke instruction and is the head coach of our Bronze team and is a level 2 ASCA certified swim coach. At the NTC Misty also designs performance enhancement programs and provides private swim stoke instruction to our clients. Misty was a competitive swimmer for 8 years and currently participates in triathlon.

Assistant Coach: Nicole Castelyn
Nicole Castelyn is finishing her Elementary Education major at UCF. Nicole was born and raised in South Africa where she competed in competitive swimming since the age of 8, and represented South Africa at the age of twelve.
She swam in senior and junior nationals in South Africa. In America she competed in the US Open and Junior Nationals; and placed in the top three in her state in High School. Nicole swam for SDSU on a swimming scholarship from 2002-2003, and moved to Florida with her parents to finish her education. Nicole is working on her level two coaching certification and has been with NTC coaching staff since May 2006. Nicole is a level 2 ASCA Certified Swim Coach and has been with the NTC coaching staff since May 2006. Nicole coaches the Silver group.

Assistant Coach: Karleen Dawson
Karleen Dawson started swimming at the age of 6 in California. She swam for the prestigious South California Aquatics Club until she was 13, at which time her family relocated to Orlando, FL. She swam for Lake Brantley High School and for the Blue Dolphins club team under Skip Foster. At Lake Brantley, she was selected “most valuable swimmer” and was Team Captain 3 of her 4 years in high school.
Karleen entered her first triathlon in 1981 and finished second. Three years later she won a triathlon in the Bahamas which elevated her to the #1 ranked professional triathlete in the nation. Her professional ranking stayed in the top 10 for 5 years, and was followed by many more years as a nationally ranked age group triathlete.
In 1997, she became a USPTA certified tennis pro. Working as the assistant tennis pro at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort, she found great satisfaction in teaching youngsters the fundamentals of the game. “I love kids and I love to coach! Making a difference in kids lives, and quite possibly changing their lives through sport, is very important to me”.
In 2002, Karleen began competing in USMS meets and has been active in Masters Swimming ever since. She has been nationally ranked in the top 10 in her age group in several events, and has had multiple Top 5 Florida state rankings each year.
In 2005 Karleen was an assistant coach for Swift Swimming, which has since merged with Fast Lane Aquatics. With Swift, she worked with the younger age groups where the focus was on fun and fundamentals. “Coaching is both a privilege and a passion. I look forward to seeing the Blue Ribbon swimmers learn good sportsmanship, make lasting friends, perfect their strokes, and progress to the next level.” Coach Karleen is level 2 ASCA certified swim coach.

Assistant Coach Darl Bonnema
Coach Darl has been attached in one way, shape or form to water all his life. He swam for Haufax Swim Association, Mainland High School, and Daytona Bch. Community College. At DBCC he became an All American and a member of the NJCAA National Championship Team. In 1975 Darl began to instruct Swimming based out of Daytona Beach, Florida. In 1980 he became the Head Swim Coach for the Masters Swim Team at the Daytona Bch. YWCA. In addition to his Coaching, Darl also worked for the Volusia County Beach Patrol. He was elevated to a Lieutenant Position in addition to being certified as an Emergency Medical Technician. He was personally involved in over 1,000 ocean rescues, also Coach of the National Competition Team. Darl also was the Southeast Regional Ironman and Beach Run Champion. Eventually he moved to the Central Florida area where he became Aquatics Director/ Head Swim Coach/ Certified Personal Trainer for the Bay Hill Country Club. This included the Masters Program, Infant Survival Training, Private Swim Lessons, and Scuba Certification Courses. Darl was the Head Swim Coach of the Bay Hill Swim Team for 8 years. He currently owns a business, as well as Coach’s The NTC Developmental Swim Program and the NTC Masters Swim Team. Coach Darl is a USA Swimming Certified Coach. Like Alec and Karleen, Darl also loved to compete in Triathlons. At one point, Darl was ranked #1 in the state of Florida.
